Ultimate Makeover

Flip TV channels most any night and you’ll come across at least some show with a makeover theme. Sometimes sprucing up a space involves camouflage—covering up problem spots. There are so many ways to make the imperfect look better. And the makeover craze doesn’t stop with our homes. “Extreme Makeover” follows individuals through the process of changing their bodies. Sometimes extensive plastic surgery is done to improve attractiveness and preserve the look of youth.

I am struck by the fact that while appearances may be changed, the inside or what’s below the surface remains the same. Bodies will continue to age, and a damaged wall is still a damaged wall under all the repair, texture and paint. Thankfully we are promised something better in Christ:
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!
2 Corinthians 5: 17
And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory . . .
2 Corinthians 3: 18
Listen, I tell you a mystery . . . we will all be changed—in a flash, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet . . . For the perishable must clothe itself with the imperishable, and the mortal with immortality.
1 Corinthians 15: 51-53
I’ll confess that I spent an entire evening watching decorating shows while on vacation (the hotel had HGTV!), and I am fascinated by before and after images. Still, I know God calls us to not just settle for whitewashing on the outside. He gives us Christ to work in us the ultimate, eternal makeover.
